Research and Evaluation of the Oklahoma A+ Schools Program

A+ Schools program is a community effort — from teachers and principals to janitors and bus drivers — to integrate the arts into the classroom. The Project is part of the DaVinci Institute, an educational partnership between 10 Oklahoma colleges and universities established in February 2000 to strengthen arts education and cultural development throughout the state. The program is based on a model that infuses arts throughout the curriculum. The model has proved that arts-rich schools teach students to be innovative problem solvers and flexible thinkers.

NASA-EPSCoR Education Outreach Element

Utilizing secondary school students to collect data, the principal research goal of this element is to develop and establish research data collection networks. Information reported from three representative field sites provides statewide variation in such parameters as precipitation, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration. Three instructional objectives ensure this research goal is achieved. Teacher enhancement workshops prepare teachers for: 1) utilizing scientific techniques to maintain a stream gauge; 2) using remotely sensed imagery to map and detect land use change; and 3) procedures to detect soil moisture.
