In today's complex society, human issues are paramount to economic development in the state, nation, and world...CHES focuses on the challenges of the interdependent relationship between research and society, mutually shaping and changing the human environment.

The College of Human Environmental Sciences focuses on the inter-relationships between human beings and their environment. In today's complex society, human issues are paramount to economic development in the state, nation, and world. Scientists in CHES are producing knowledge which provides new insights that assist in:

1) Promoting and contributing to human development and healthy family functions
2) Improving human nutrition and health
3) Designing and managing environments
4) Organizing and delivering products and services in ways that improve quality of life

The Bureau for Social Research (BSR), an interdisciplinary university entity (located in HES), was established this year. The Bureau focuses on social and behavioral science research using the expertise of faculty members at the University. Projects are often multidisciplinary and may include participation from other universities and organizations. Services of the Bureau include: designing the research project, data collection and management, statistical analyses, quality control methods, and written reports. Examples of projects range from a study for the Governor's Task Force on Substance Abuse to the economic impact study of Marginal Wells in Oklahoma. BSR offers a wide range of services from consultation to full-scale projects.
Health issues are a major concern in the U. S. and internationally. Issues of nutrient needs for health and the prevention of disease are critical. CHES faculty focus on research which identifies ways of helping people meet their nutritional needs.
In fall, 1997, the Nutritional Science Laboratories were dedicated. This renovation project represents several years planning and construction by faculty and staff. The open design of the Founders and Associates Human Nutrition Laboratory, which houses faculty, is an innovative approach to scientific laboratory experiences. Faculty have individual benches within the larger laboratory and share expertise, major equipment, and laboratory samples for experiments. The laboratory facilities' research is in trace minerals, nutrient interactions, and nutrition education. Among collaborative faculty, the renovation has been very successful and provides the basis for an increase in fiscal year grants of 2.297 percent. Research that focuses on the direct and indirect economic impacts of individuals is also crucial for the creation of new knowledge, products, and processes.
The Integrated Computer and Product Testing Laboratory provides a technologically superior, science-based education in areas not usually known as scientific fields. The National Science Foundation provided a grant matched by the State Regents which allows students to conduct statistical analyses of test results and link these results to science-based explanations related to product performance. The industry equipment knowledge allows product testing and research partnerships with small companies.
Assessment of management processes in the hospitality industry can significantly impact the state economy. Understanding employee needs, future trends, and how services are delivered is important to increasing customer satisfaction and increased revenues.
CHES focuses on the challenges of the interdependent relationship between research and society, mutually shaping and changing the human environment.. Through shared knowledge positive impacts will be made in the university, society, nation, and world.
