Project Highlights
The School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology (SAHEP) offers students a variety of academic studies from athletic training to counseling. Programs include Health and Human Performance, Physical Education, Leisure Studies, Counseling, Educational and School Psychology, and gifted and talented programs. The faculty is actively engaged in research that reflects the school's diversity. Environmental issues continue to be at the forefront of interest to the Leisure Studies faculty who are engaged in sponsored research of local land and water use and the development of recreation and tourism in projects across Oklahoma. The National Youth Sports (NYSP) , conducted through SAHEP, is in its 25th year. This summer the program brought approximately 500 children from surrounding areas to campus to participate in sports activities. Students commuted to OSU for 25 days of activities, which included hot lunches provided by USDA and the Stillwater Public Schools. In addition to behavioral research traditionally conducted by its faculty, sponsorship of paid practicum programs continues to provide graduate students in Educational Psychology opportunities to gain practical experience in counseling in clinics across Oklahoma.
The School of Curriculum and Instruction (SCEL) primarily
focuses on the integrated study of curriculum, instructional process,
professional development, special education, and educational leadership.
Undergraduate degrees are offered in elementary, secondary, and
K-12 education, and technical and industrial education. Research
in professional education includes groundbreaking programs such
as Oklahoma Higher Education Partners in Service-Learning.
This project combines authentic community service with integrated
academic outcomes helping students to learn while meeting real
community needs. Other research programs include the Professional
Development Institute for Mentor Teachers in which over 100
Oklahoma teachers serve as mentors for first-year teachers. A
multi-year project funded by the National Science Foundation focuses
on interdisciplinary approaches to teaching by Integrating
Mathematics and Reading Curricula for Preservice Elementary Teachers.
SCEL faculty has been very active in promoting research for
teaching at all levels including international training programs
in vocational education.
The School of Educational Studies (SES) encompasses programs
fundamental to educational thought and practice and includes a
variety of topics associated with adult education, technology,
business, and industry. The school offers degrees in nine program
areas: adult education, higher education, human resource development,
organization and leadership, research and evaluation, social foundations,
student personnel, and educational technology. Currently, the
Community Education Consortium Program: Building Stronger School-Family-Community
Partnerships is conducting workshops across the state to coordinate
services for community programs.
Since October 1979 the College has administered the Aerospace Education Services Program (AESP) of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). AESP provides teachers, students, and the general public nationwide with information about NASA's latest programs and research. Information is disseminated through demonstration and lecture programs provided by 33 aerospace education specialists who are based at nine space flight and research centers across the nation, and by faculty of the college. Through the College of Education, SES has administered this NASA public affairs program for 29 of its 36 years in existence. Specifically, AESP provides aerospace education community involvement programs; courses and workshops for elementary and secondary school teachers; assistance with curriculum revision and development activities of national, state, regional, and local programs; presentations for delivery on educational television and radio; presentations before civic clubs and professional organizations; special services at science and technology centers; in-service programs for aerospace specialists; and the development of instructional materials for various aerospace activities. The program offers several of these activities in selected inner city areas. Another NASA contract allows the College of Education to direct the administration of the Teaching From Space Program and the disbursement of its funds. The college also provides logistical support for workshops and conferences associated with the program.
