The Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources is currently strengthening its research programs in Tulsa and surrounding areas.

Wheat plots being harvested at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Goodwell yield a lot more than grain. Research here looks at irrigation versus dryland plantings, as well as drought-resistant wheat that do better under the semi-arid conditions of western Oklahoma.
While maintaining a high level of presence all across the state, the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources is currently strengthening its research programs in Tulsa and surrounding areas. With OSU/Tulsa becoming a reality on January 1, 1999, the Division would like for Tulsans to know that its research arm, the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES), has many on-going projects in their area and more are scheduled.

Click on the buttons below to read more about ongoing experiments.

Examples of OAES research can be found at the Vegetable Research Station at 13711 S. Mingo, just north of the Arkansas River from Bixby....

Research continues at other Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station sites around the state as well. Studies at the Wes Watkins Agricultural Research and Extension Center (WWAREC) at Lane also are geared toward the production of small fruits and vegetables....

OSU horticulturists and Food and Agricultural Processing Center scientists are conducting research with support from the Texas-Oklahoma Watermelon Growers Association to measure and improve food safety factors and shelf life in cut melons....

Members of OSU's Horticulture and Landscape Architecture department are studying combinations of mulch and irrigation to promote growth on newly-established pecan trees....

OAES horticulture researchers are looking at what happens when plant bacterial spot attacks bell peppers....

Researchers in OSU's Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture also are looking at reducing the amount of plant nutrients lost in container plant nurseries and greenhouses following drip and sprinkler irrigation....

Another study aimed at benefiting the environment as well as producers is the Animal Waste in Semi-Arid Agro-Ecosystems research project located at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Goodwell....

OAES wheat breeders are working with a semi-dwarfing gene from durum wheat and another that resides in Australian spring wheat lines to try to produce a wheat variety that is more targeted to the dual purpose production of forage and grain....

As a result of another wheat research effort, the EPA provided a Section 18 emergency exemption to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, enabling state wheat growers to use the herbicide Maverick on the fall, 1998 crop for the control of cheat....

Smart machines and machines that can "see" continue to make inroads into the agricultural industry, and research here marks OSU as a leader rather than a follower in these fields....

OAES agricultural economists used a computer model called the Fed Cattle Market Simulator (FCMS) to determine the impact public information has on price discovery and marketing efficiency in the fed cattle market....

While there is a lot of research being conducted in Tulsa and the Tulsa area, the OAES continues to spread its efforts across the entire state as well, from Tom to Beaver, bringing the latest in scientific research to all parts of Oklahoma.
