Researchers in the social and behavioral sciences have a number of ongoing projects that may help policy makers resolve a number of issues. In the Department of Political Science a project to provide management assistance for a community-based environmental health infrastructure is helping the Native American communities located near the Sequoyah Fuels Facility at Gore to develop effective management of long-term health hazards caused by radioactive environmental contamination. Another project in the department is identifying and comparing environmental and social values held by stakeholders in the Illinois River Basin so more effective environmental protection strategies can be developed. The department is also developing a course to train members of the fire fighting community in emergency management. The Department of Sociology continues with its work with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services' (DHS) Developmental Disabilities Services Division. This project provides DHS with a longitudinal assessment of consumer outcomes for more than 3700 individuals who receive services. Faculty in the department are also studying new policing techniques including community policing. In the Department of Psychology faculty members are looking at a wide range of subjects including depression and anxiety among Japanese Americans, various aspects of sexual abuse, adolescent alcohol use, memory in infants and problem-solving as it relates to complex financial problems. Researchers in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (formerly the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology) are studying acoustical characteristics of oral communicative patterns in individuals ranging in age from young preadolescents to college-aged, and groups of 40-, 60- and 80-year-olds. They are also studying the language patterns used by adults who have had physical traumas. Research also continues to provide information on infant-caregiver interactions during the infant feeding process. There are also ongoing projects providing information about developing speakers' language usage, and the communicative patterns of children with a variety of language disorders. Both the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Department of Psychology place graduate students in clinical practicums at various facilities around the state. A number of different projects are underway in the Department of Geography including several reconnaissance level surveys of Oklahoma communities to determine if some properties and districts in the communities will be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Researchers continue to make use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a variety of applications including agriculture, highway signage, and response systems for oil pollution along rivers.
