Faculty in the humanities also bring a wide variety of research interests to the College. Among the projects in the Department of English was an examination of the encounters between Native Americans and Euro-Americans in the late 19th century in the American Southwest. Grants also provided partial support for work on novels and a book of poetry by authors in the department. Other scholars looked at how America was represented on the English stage in the mid-17th century. A number of the faculty in the department are involved in efforts to put in place a program known as Writing Across the Curriculum. Researchers in the Department of History are studying Cold War propaganda, patterns of migration in Medieval English towns, and the role of the church in colonial Massachusetts. Projects are also ongoing in the department that examine the history of the Pueblo Land Boards in New Mexico and clandestine activities on the US-Mexican border in the early 20th century. Projects in the Department of Philosophy include two long-running summer academies (one for students, one for teachers) to study ancient life in Oklahoma, a study of biomedical ethics as it relates to Native American cultures, and an examination of the Confucian understanding of the responsibility of adult children to care for aging parents. In the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature researchers are studying such topics as women's education in 19th century France and narratives by German women who traveled in Africa at the turn of the century.
