Report From the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate College

Thomas C. Collins

On behalf of all the individuals involved in research and other sponsored programs at Oklahoma State University, it is my pleasure to present the 1994 Oklahoma State University Research Report.

Dr. Zuhair Al-Shaieb, Regents Professor of Geology and Head of the Geology Department at Oklahoma State University, works with a research polarizing microscope used to determine the paleotemperatures of reservoir rocks during hydrocarbon migration. Dr. Al-Shaieb has primarily focused his research on investigating the concept of compartmentation of natural gas reservoirs in the Anadarko and Arkoma basins in Oklahoma. Dr. Al-Shaieb was featured on the cover of the 1994 Research Report

OSU achieved a new record of expenditures for research and sponsored programs in 1994. Faculty, students, and staff, working together, pushed the University's expenditures for these programs to $102,595,571, a 2.5% increase from fiscal year 1993. This increase continues the trend of rising research and sponsored program activity; over the past five years, expenditures have increased by $17.5 million, more than 20% (see Figure 1).

In 1994, research expenditures accounted for $76,443,812. Most notably in this total, funding from federal agencies grew significantly in FY 94; expenditure of federal funds for research increased by $4.1 million, over 16%, from FY 93. This increase also continues a trend in rising federally-funded research. Over the past four years, expenditure of federal funds for research has increased $11.1 million, or nearly 60% (see Figure 2).

However, the value of the scholarship, the activities supported by these expenditures, demand much more than a fiscal snapshot. Therefore, this publication contains a synopsis of each research project conducted during the past year. The variety and scope of the projects will allow those outside the University to view the diversity of the OSU faculty and the many opportunities that exist for study and intellectual growth on the OSU campuses. A close look at the specific departmental and center activities will reveal the depth and strength of areas in which OSU has taken national and international leadership roles. We welcome you to use this report to explore the opportunities that may await you as a research sponsor, a potential faculty or staff member, a future student, or a citizen of the State of Oklahoma.

My thanks to all of you who made FY 94 a successful and exciting year. I am very proud that each of you chose to participate so fully in the scholarly activities of your profession. With you, I look forward to the challenges and exciting opportunities in the coming year.
